Early in Season 19, NCIS bid farewell to one of its most iconic characters: Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon. After nearly two decades and over 400 episodes, Harmon stepped away from his leading role in October 2021. Though there’s no confirmation heβll ever return, his presence still looms large over the series.
Gibbsβ Legacy Lives On in NCIS
Though Gibbs found peace in Alaska and said an emotional goodbye to McGee and the team in Season 19, Episode 4 (βGreat Wide Openβ), he remains a key part of NCIS. Harmon continues to appear in the opening credits, and his character is regularly mentioned in dialogue. In the winter premiere episode βPledge of Allegiance,β Gibbs was referenced once againβproof of his ongoing impact.
A Secret Generosity Revealed
One of Gibbsβ quietest, most heartfelt acts came to light at the end of that same episode. Director Vance revealed that Gibbs had secretly deposited $10,000 into the accounts of McGee and Jimmy Palmer. The funds were part of the βLeroy Jethro Gibbs College Scholarship Club,β created in honor of his late daughter, Kelly. Over the years, Gibbs had continued to grow the fund, helping agents and their families with education costsβanother testament to the depth of his character.
The Cast Reflects on Mark Harmonβs Influence
Off-screen, Mark Harmonβs influence is just as powerful. Known for his strong leadership and low-key demeanor, Harmon earned deep respect from his castmates throughout his time on the show. Sean Murray, who plays McGee, has often spoken about Harmonβs mentorship and professionalism. Their bond stretches back to the 1990s, when they first worked together on Harts of the Westβa time Murray recalls fondly, noting the lasting impression Harmon made on him even then.
Cote de Pablo, who portrayed Ziva David, described her relationship with Harmon as βforged in fire,β seeing him as both a mentor and a father figure. Michael Weatherly (Tony DiNozzo) echoed those sentiments, praising Harmonβs honesty, humility, and steady hand on set. Harmonβs wife, Pam Dawber, added that his behind-the-scenes attitude was always focused on doing right by everyone involved, without ego or pretense.
A Lasting Impact
Though Mark Harmon is no longer a part of the NCIS day-to-day, both Gibbs the character and Harmon the actor continue to shape the series in meaningful ways. Whether he ever returns or not, his legacy is deeply embedded in the heart of NCIS.
