No Way Out Blue Bloods Boss Drops Bombshell on Finale & Spinoff Rumors!

An executive producer of Blue Bloods has offered some insight into how the long-running series wrapped up. The police procedural, which followed the Reagan family โ€” an intergenerational clan deeply rooted in New York law enforcement โ€” aired its final episode on December 13 after an impressive 14-season run. The show’s main cast featured Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou, Tom Selleck, Sami Gayle, Vanessa Ray, and Marisa Ramirez. While several cast members have shown interest in potential spinoffs, the finale itself didnโ€™t lay any clear groundwork for one.

In an interview with Deadline, executive producer Kevin Wade addressed the show’s conclusion and the idea of a spinoff. He explained that the success and longevity of Blue Bloods stemmed from its focus on the Reagan family as a whole, rather than any single character. According to Wade, you couldnโ€™t just move one character to another city โ€” like New Orleans โ€” and expect it to feel like Blue Bloods.

Wade made it clear that crafting a spinoff was never part of the plan during the writing of the finale. However, he left the door slightly open, noting they didnโ€™t deliberately include or exclude anything to set one up. In his words:

โ€œItโ€™s a fine questionโ€ฆ Look, Blue Bloods existed not as a lead character. It existed as long as it did, and people liked it, because of that family. Thatโ€™s a lot of actors. Then going out from there, thereโ€™s Steve Schirripa and Marisa Ramirez and Greg Jbara, Bob Clohessy, Abigail Hawk โ€” there were satellites that made the whole. You couldnโ€™t just take one of them, place them in New Orleans and say, Blue Bloods: New Orleans. So that was never an option. So in the ingredients in the kitchen for the finale, we didnโ€™t try to do that, not purposefully or one way or the other. Believe me, that just was not on the horizon when we were doing it.โ€
