Star Trek Star Joins Blue Bloods Spinoff Boston Blue With Donnie Wahlberg
The Blue Bloods universe is expandingโand it’s bringing in a fan-favorite from the Star Trek franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Star Trek: Discovery star Sonequa Martin-Green has officially joined the cast of Boston Blue, the highly anticipated spinoff of CBS’s long-running police drama.
Martin-Green will star opposite Blue Bloods veteran Donnie Wahlberg, reprising his role as Detective Danny Reagan. In Boston Blue, Danny relocates from New York City to Boston, where he’s partnered with Martin-Greenโs character, Detective Lena Peters. Much like Danny, Lena comes from a multi-generational law enforcement familyโmaking the two instant kindred spirits with plenty of shared values and friction ahead.
The series is being spearheaded by co-showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (The Blacklist), with executive production handled by Wahlberg himself, alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed for Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Unlike the original Blue Bloods, which was created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, Boston Blue marks a new creative chapter for the franchise. The series is slated to premiere on CBS this fall.
Originally developed as a standalone series, Boston Blue was folded into the Blue Bloods universe after a well-received pilot script caught CBSโs attention. Wahlberg expressed his excitement in March with a heartfelt message to fans:
โSo excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions, and to welcome all of you โ to Boston Blue! The next chapter in the Blue Bloods legacy begins. I canโt wait. See you CBS fall!โ
Blue Bloods debuted in 2010 and quickly became a beloved staple of CBSโs lineup, following the Reagan familyโs law enforcement legacy in New York. The series, starring Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan, and Len Cariou, concluded in 2024 after 14 successful seasons and nearly 300 episodes.
With Boston Blue, fans can expect fresh stories, new dynamics, and a continuation of the core themes that made Blue Bloods a hitโfamily, justice, and unwavering loyalty. And with Sonequa Martin-Green joining the ranks, this next chapter is already shaping up to be must-see TV.
