Donnie Wahlberg Teases ‘Boston Blue’ Will Answer Lingering Blue Bloods Questions
Donnie Wahlberg knows the Blue Bloods finale left longtime fans craving closure — and he’s promising they’ll get it in the upcoming spinoff Boston Blue. During an interview with Extra on May 7, Wahlberg hinted that the new series will deliver the updates fans have been waiting for about the Reagan family.
“The first question I had when this opportunity came up was, ‘Where did we leave off with Blue Bloods — and what does that mean going forward?’” said Wahlberg, 55. “So a lot happened at the end, and Boston Blue is going to give updates on what’s happened since then. That’s all I can say.”
While Wahlberg played coy about specifics — including whether fan-favorite characters like Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan might return — he made one thing clear: fans won’t be disappointed. “I know what the fans want, and I will not let them down,” he joked. “I’ve been in a boyband for 41 years — and I don’t even look 41!”
Wahlberg is joined in the spinoff by The Walking Dead alum Sonequa Martin-Green, 40, who emphasized the weight of stepping into a world so beloved by viewers. “Blue Bloods meant a lot to people, and I’ve heard that firsthand for years,” she said. “We honor that. We hope people feel that respect from us.”
Despite the pressure that often comes with continuing a franchise, Wahlberg sees it as a privilege rather than a burden. “I don’t feel pressure — that’s the wrong mindset,” he explained. “It’s an incredible opportunity. I love the Reagan family. Viewers love the Reagan family. It went away — and now we get the chance to carry on those traditions.”
As both actor and producer, Wahlberg said he’s fully committed to honoring what Blue Bloods built over more than a decade. “I take that responsibility seriously. I feel lucky. To be back making great TV on CBS — it’s huge. And I have a partner who understands how to carry that legacy forward.”
With a blend of familiar faces, new energy, and deep respect for its roots, Boston Blue is shaping up to be a heartfelt continuation of the Reagan family story.
