NCIS: Origins Shocker – Lala’s Fate Changes Everything for Gibbs!

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers from the NCIS: Origins Season 2 premiere on CBS.

The NCIS prequel left fans reeling last season when Mariel Molino’s Lala was critically injured in a car crash while swerving to avoid a child—just moments after nearly sharing a kiss with Austin Stowell’s young Gibbs. Many assumed her fate was sealed.

Showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal added fuel to the fire when they hinted in April that Lala might not survive, with North teasing, “She didn’t look very good there at the end.”

Lala Lives — And Gibbs Is in Turmoil

Good news: Lala survives. But her return won’t bring Gibbs peace. Instead, the emotional fallout from her accident and his fear of losing her will haunt him throughout Season 2.

Monreal: “He’s afraid of losing her. He already lost Shannon, the love of his life. Now he has these strong feelings for Lala, and when she almost dies, he pulls away. We’re going to explore all of that this season.”

Gibbs and Diane’s Complicated Future

Gibbs also finds himself entangled with Diane (Kathleen Kenny), a relationship that fans know is destined for heartbreak.

North: “We plan to stick to canon, so yes, Gibbs will eventually get married on Origins. But we’re playing with time a bit this season, so viewers will need to stay tuned to see how that unfolds.”

’90s Nostalgia & “Good Vibrations”

The premiere delivered some lighter moments too, including a hilarious sequence featuring Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch’s “Good Vibrations.”

Monreal: “We wanted to show how the team is evolving—coming together and finding their rhythm. The ‘Good Vibrations’ callback and those light-up shoes were our way of embracing that early ’90s vibe.”

What’s Next: New Faces & Familiar Voices

Fans won’t have to wait long to meet Frank’s brother, played by Philip Winchester.

North: “He’ll appear early in the season, and it’s going to be a powerful story that changes Frank forever.”

And yes—Mark Harmon’s voice will continue to open each episode.

North: “Mark’s still very involved and incredibly proud of the show. He’s a huge part of what makes Origins work.”

Another Cliffhanger Ahead?

Don’t expect a calm ending this year.

North: “We already know how Season 2 will end—and yes, it’s another big cliffhanger.”
