Donnie Wahlberg Ready to Lead ‘Boston Blue’ and Keep the Reagan Legacy Alive

Donnie Wahlberg is stepping into a new chapter of the Blue Bloods legacy with a starring role in the upcoming spinoff series, Boston Blue. The 55-year-old actor recently appeared virtually on PIX11 News, where he shared fresh insights into the new project and how he plans to bring Detective Danny Reagan into a new setting—while staying true to the character fans have come to love.

The biggest change? Filming will now take place in Boston, Wahlberg’s hometown, instead of the iconic New York City streets where Blue Bloods was filmed for 14 seasons. Still, Wahlberg promised that Danny Reagan’s New York roots remain firmly intact.

“The good news is Danny Reagan will still be a Mets fan,” he said with a grin, prompting laughter from the hosts. “Let’s just get that out of the way. And right now, with the Mets having the best record in baseball, Danny’s going to be pretty happy.”

Reflecting on Blue Bloods ending, Wahlberg spoke candidly about how hard the entire team worked to keep the show alive. “We tried so hard to keep Blue Bloods on the air. All of us—the cast, the crew—everyone. Working with our New York crew was one of the great thrills of my life,” he shared. “But when CBS came to me about continuing the character, I thought, ‘Well, that sounds interesting.’”

Wahlberg hinted that Boston Blue will stay connected to its roots and might even feature appearances or nods to familiar faces. “If anyone knows Danny Reagan—and if anyone knows me—I love surprises. The Reagans will always be just a phone call away. Danny likes to use his phone,” he teased. “So I imagine we’ll pay homage to Blue Bloods as much as we can, honor what it started, and carry that legacy forward—with plenty of surprises along the way.”
